Scout Niblett

Scout Niblett

I saw Scout play at The Rosemount in Perth and it was honestly the best live show I've ever seen. She's so tiny and she has this sweet little voice and then she produces this amazing scream and bashes away at those drums. And many thanks to Ginnaz for arranging a call-out. Here are a couple of tracks from her 2001 album, Sweet Heart Fever, thanks to Sputnik7...

Why wasn't I cool when I was alive?

Nick Drake

In the tradition of Van Gogh and Emily Dickenson, Nick Drake is a vicitm of posthumous fame. I suppose vicitim isn't really the right word, it's great that people are listening now, but it's a shame he never got to experience the wide-spread adoration that he receives now-a-days. Here's a little list of some appearances his voice has made in the past few years...

1998 'Road' in Hideous Kinky [buy the soundtrack]

1999 'Pink Moon' in a Volkswagon Cabrio ad [
click here to see ad on YouTube]

2000 heaps of tracks in WB mini-series Young Americans

2001 'Northern Sky' in Serendipity [buy the soundtrack]

2001 'Fly' in The Royal Tenenbaums [buy the soundtrack]

2004 'One Of These Things First' in Garden State [buy the soundtrack]

I know I've heard his songs in the background of heaps of other shows and movies recently and now I'm pissed off that I didn't write them down. Please email me if you can think of any...

Mila Jovovich

Mila Jovovich

The Fifth Element is one of my all time favourite movies [watch out for my future post of the opera song from the movie - brilliant.]. And this chicky has alot to do with that. And who would have thought she could sing? She has appeared in various fashion shows with her band and has an album, 'Divine Comedy'. And might I mention her appearence in Dased and Confused where she sings a bit from 'The Alien Song'. Here are a few songs courtesy of her official webiste...

One Horse Town

One Horse Town

I wanted to make a point of only posting bands that I respect rather than just groups who happen to reside in the same city/country as me. These guys reside in both catagories for me. They've been touring the Perth scene for a while now, and have supported Little Birdy, Evermore, End Of Fashion and Emiliana Torrini. I've seen them perform live a few times and it never gets old, and not just because their lead singer/guitarist, Sascha Ion, is incredibly hot. They're a solid team.

Here are a couple of tunes from their Information EP...

*Katherine Moennig*

Cut Copy

Ever wondered what music your favourite artists listen to? I'm going to do a series of posts on music listened to by various 'celebritities' of music, film, tv and other random artists. Part 1 is dedicated to everybody's favourite actress from Showtime/Channel 7's The L Word, Katherine Moennig. And guess what? As well as The Killers and The Pixies, it seems Kate is also a fan of Aussie band, CutCopy!
Here's an interview with them from Triple J...

Elephant Parade

Sickly sweet, but in a good way. These guys are like fairy floss and puppy dogs, and, somehow, they make it work. This is my favourite song of there's so far...thanks to You Ain't No Picasso.

New Be Good Tanyas Album!

Hello Love

The Be Good Tanyas are a unique Canadian country/folk threesome. Their new album is titled, Hello Love. I discovered these guys through watching The L Word (on which Frazey Ford appears briefly [as mentioned in a previous post]) and from my girlfriend's love of Jolie Holland (former BGTs band member).

Americana.com offers a review of the album. Here's a taste...
"Their latest album, Hello Love, is a wonderful, dreamy, funky, airy thing that I find delicious and habit forming. The Be Good Tanyas are not meat-and-potatoes kind of Americana music. But, for those raised at a table where your serving of Neil Young could be seasoned with a shaker full of Prince, I highly recommend Hello Love."

Brian Ritchie moves to Tazzie

Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes' bassist, Brian Richie, has bought some land in Hobart from Peter Garret, been granted a 'distinguished artist residency', is practicing his shakuhachi, updating his blog and is continuing his various collaborations, including The Mysterious Green Mist. As always, we are happy to have him.

Devendra branches out: Cibelle & Vetiver

This post has two parts. The first is a new series, a collection of collaborations. The first edition of which is Cibelle and Devendra Banhart...

London, London

Part Two is about a band that Devendra has toured with and spoken of with love in many interviews, Vetiver. Very mellow. See what you think...

On A Nerve

...And then there's a couple of photos that crack me up. I have since read and watched various interviews that connects all these people in various ways but these images were the first things that really brought home the realisation that the world is apparently as small as Perth. Everyone is connected. The so called 'New Freaks of America Movement' is a whole bunch of people I like to listen to, and as they are all suddenly grouped into the same category, I am saddened by the fact that this is the way it's gotta go. And it seems they are too. Each such individual people, and making such a point of the fact and yet there is some weird need to group them all together. Well. This is an appearances tribute. You were there, it connects, it's all good.
